DURBAN REEFS

doug

'Two thirds of the earth is covered with water and anyone who does not dive has been short changed by life and has seen only part of what our planet has to offer'.

DURBAN offers a wide variety of dives, for divers with all levels of experience. If you are looking for something a bit different then DURBAN is a must:

#1 REEF DIVE SITES:

AMPHITHEATRE
Maximum Depth: 30m

A large wall in the shape of an amphitheatre. Plenty of pelagic fish can be seen here taking advantage of the profile and shape of the reef. Potential for seeing sharks.

ANCHOR HILL
Maximum Depth: 30m

This site has many boulders and rock pinnacles which are wrapped with long pieces of anchor chain. A number of large anchors can still be seen wedged in between the huge block formations of this site. A feeding ground for sharks, so keep a look out.

THE LEDGE
Maximum Depth: 40m

A ledge starting at 30m and dropping off to 40m, with spectacular soft corals. Lots of pelagic fish and manta rays feed in this area. In the winter months Ragged-tooth sharks have been sighted in the cave. Only known site where the Harlequin Goldie has been spotted on a reef.

BLUFF DIVE SITES:

CAVES
Maximum Depth: 13m

An interlinking chain of gullies and caves carved into the sandstone reef. Take along a torch and gloves to explore all the nooks and crannies.

BLUFF - BLOOD REEF DIVE SITES:

BIRTHDAY LEDGES
Maximum Depth: 18m

So named because it is like a birthday present and is full of surprises. There are quite a few caves and overhangs along the ledge, which in itself are pretty impressive.

DOUG'S CAVE
Maximum Depth: 18m

The natural faultline in the sea bed has formed two huge caves that offer marvelous viewing of a variety of fish. The reef starts in a large cave then moves into a series of caves and gullies.

PAT'S PLACE
Maximum Depth: 18m

Located on Blood Reef at the northern end of the faultline, with rising limestone formations. There is a lot of marine variety and it is a good dive for the more experienced diver. Take a torch!

BIKINI
Maximum Depth: 22m

Thise reef is located NE of Blood Reef with lots of little overhangs where the Pineapple fish tend to hide!!

WRECKS:

COOPERS LIGHTHOUSE WRECK
Maximum Depth: 32m

cooper

Lying about 4km off Treasure Beach on the Bluff is one of the best wreck dives off the KZN coast. She lies upright in 24 - 32m of water and is home to the most prolific amount of marine life. Confusion surronds the actual identity of the wreck and it has therefore been named after the nearby Coopers Lighthouse.

THE FONTAO WRECK
Maximum Depth: 27m

fontoa

THE FONTAO lies in 27m of water, 3km directly off Umhlanga's lighthouse. This vessel started life as a deep ocean trawler. It was recommissioned by ORI (Oceanographic Research Institute) and sunk as an artificial reef in 1977. The wreck is now teeming with a full complement of tropical reef fish and also hosts schools of bait fish, which attract larger predators.

THE T-BARGE WRECK
Maximum Depth: 27m

THE T-BARGE lies 2km off Virginia Airport at a depth of 27m. An ORI (Oceanographic Research Institute) experiment, this unusual vessel with three cranes on the deck, is now surrounded by vast schools of swirling bait fish and provides a haven for juvenile reef fish.

PLEASE NOTE:

All wrecks are reserved for ADVANCED divers only!

Costs: R200-00 per person, per dive excluding equipment hire.
