DIVING CONDITIONS FOR SHELLY BEACH:

19 June 2013:

PROTEA BANKS - NORTHERNS

Current: medium 

Viz: 15m, a bit milky

Sea temp: 21 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

1 HUGE shark in the distance but could not make it out. 1 nice encounter with a Oceanic Blacktip shark. 2 Potato Bass, 1 very friendly. 4 Remora following us. Lots of Bonita rushing past us near the end of the dive.  AND 4 Whales from the boat.

17 June 2013:

PROTEA BANKS - NORTHERNS

Current: almost non existent 

Viz: 15m, a bit milky

Sea temp: 21 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

First Cave full of RAGGED -TOOTH sharks, with other Raggies all over the reef. 3 Zambezi (Bull) sharks. 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in and out. At least 3 Potato Bass popping in and our of the dive. Lots of reef fish. WOW WHAT A DAY!


16 June 2013:

PROTEA BANKS - NORTHERNS

Current: mild - reverse

Viz: 15 to 20m, a bit milky

Sea temp: 21 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

RAGGED -TOOTH sharks all over the reef and in the caves (must have counted at least 30). Absolutely stunning. 1 Massive Potato Bass that came in to say Hi a few times. 1 Oceanic Blacktip shark midwater. Lots of reef fish around. WHAT A PERFECT DAY TO BE IN THE WATER!

12 June 2013:

Awesome dives on our local reef( fish and chips) today.... Viz was 15m. Water temperature was 22 degrees Celsius.

We had 3 Natal Catfish, a Juvenile Muscle Cracker, lots of Reef fish. Lots of Star fish and Nudibranch's throughout the dive... Reef had lots of caves and ledges.. Really good dives....

11 June 2013:

Whoop, whoop ... finally got to dive our shallow reef Savannah today. Viz was 20m. Water temperature was about 23 degrees Celsius.

We had Dolphins from the boat. One the dive we had a Blue Spotted Ray. Lots of Crayfish. 1 big Rockcod and lots of juvenile Rockcod. 1 Pufferfish. Lots of zebra fish. Natal snoek and Nudibranchs. A really pretty dive!

8 June 2013:

PROTEA BANKS - NORTHERNS

Current: mild

Viz: 20 - 25m

Sea temp: 23 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

Whales, Dolphins, a Hammerhead and snoek while doing the 'Salute to the Ocean'. On the way out to Protea we had another 6 Humpback Whales. On the dive we had 3 Oceanic Blacktip sharks, 1 Spinner shark and 3 Potato Bass together. Also 1 Brindle Bass and lots of reef fish.

2 June 2013:

PROTEA BANKS - SOUTHERNS

Current: mild

Viz: 30m+

Sea temp: 22 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

So what happens when you drop into warm water, realize that viz is top to bottom and there is no current? .... you know this is going to be an INCREDIBLE dive!!!!!. So firstly the viz is endless and the reef so alive with a wide variety of fish. Then you spot a Ragged-tooth shark, which is a bit out of place on Southerns. Then a couple of Potato Bass pop in to say Hi ... just to make sure you haven't forgotten about them. AND then you have 12 DOLPHINS swimming towards you, you rub your eyes and think you are dreaming ... but no there are 12 Dolphins now swimming, at 30m, right past you. Okay ... so dive could have ended right here but is doesn't ... another Potato Bass swims right up to you and then you spot a big shoal of Kingfish surrounded by so many reef fish. Then a glimpse of a Lesser Guitar shark.

On the way up we were entertained by 4 Oceanic Blacktip sharks. AND then we spot a fisherman's paradise - HUNDREDS of shoaling fish including Bigeye Kingfish, with Tropical Amberjacks popping in and out.

AND then of course there were the 5 Remora's, that decided today was a great day to attack Kym's hair ... I must admit a few choice words were used!

WOW, WHAT A DAY, ACTION FROM BEGINNING TO END (a 72 minute dive)! Thanks to my special dive buddy - SURESH - another ONCE IN A LIFETIME!

31 May 2013:

PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild

Viz: 20m (a bit milky)

Sea temp: 23 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

First Dive: NORTHERNS - Hardly any current so got time to explore the reef. Lots of reef fish and a Potato Bass. Then coming up had at least 3 Zambezi (Bull) and 3 Oceanic Blacktips sharks popping in and out of dive, for about 40 minutes! WOW, what a dive!

Second Dive: SOUTHERNS - Again hardly any current, so lots of time spent on the reef, which was spectacular. Also has 1 Potato Bass and a Black Spotted Ray. In midwater we were then joined by 3 Oceanic Blacktip sharks which were very friendly, one that kept on coming in very close and showing off. The viz was a bit reduced from the first dive but the interaction with the Oceanic BLacktips was INCREDIBLE!!!!

26 May 2013:

PROTEA BANKS - BAITED DIVE

Current: mild

Viz: 20m +

Sea temp: 23 degrees Celsius

Sightings:

BAITED DIVE: 3 Dusky sharks, 1 HUGE!!!! 4 Zambezi (Bull) sharks and 8 Oceanic Blacktip sharks. 1 Potato Bass. Lots of tuna. REALLY GREAT DIVE!!!!!!!
